Salivary Gland Stone – Symptoms, Treatment for Stones in Duct

Dehydration is more likely to occur in a person who does not drink sufficient fluids but is compounded further by losing water through bodily processes like excessive perspiration in hot environments. It may also be associated with fluid loss from vomiting and diarrhea or due to the use of diuretic medication. A salivary gland stone can also arise without dehydration like when there is chronic inflammation of the salivary gland (sialoadenitis). This can occur due to chronic infection of the salivary gland and with certain autoimmune conditions like Sjogrens syndrome. Another possible cause of a salivary gland stone is hypercalcemia, which is excessive levels of calcium in the blood. Sometimes impacted food debris may cause occlusion of the salivary duct and trigger symptoms similar to a salivary gland stone.

Signs and Symptoms of Salivary Duct Stones

Salivary gland stones are most likely to affect the submandibular glands. Usually there is more than one stone and the sizes of these stones vary anywhere from less than 1 mm (millimeter) to 9 to 10 mm or even larger. If there is only partial obstruction of the affected salivary duct, then symptoms may be minimal or absent (asymptomatic).
